Burnham tennis fun day serves up a treat

August 27 – A fun day of tennis in Burnham on Saturday saw dozens of people treated to a high-quality show of sport, and much more besides.

Budding tennis players young and old turned out at the tennis courts on Berrow Road for the fundraiser, in aid of the Nathan Edwards Tennis Academy.

Organiser Sally Edwards said the event was a 'huge success' and featured tennis matches, a barbecue and many different games.

She said: “It was a fun day and people of all ages had a go at playing tennis including LibDem parliamentary candidate Tessa Munt who played…enthusiastically!

“Performance coach Jamie Allen worked with the youngest players and there was a display of class tennis from William Archer, who recently qualified for the main draw of the Under 12 Nationals in Bournemouth.”

Sally also wanted to let all those who entered the 'Name the Bear' competition that he was eventually named Marmite and was won by a young lad called Kieron.

The main raffle prize on the day was a £25 voucher for a meal for two at the Zalshah Indian restaurant in College Street, and was won by Adam Marchant.

Sally added: “We could not have managed without the help of Lorna, Rhianon and Courtney Parsons who support the academy so well.

“In the end we made £308 for the academy and we hope to put on several events in the next few months.”

Brilliant Bettles claims national tennis title

August 27 – Taunton’s Andrew Bettles is celebrating after winning the boys’ 16 and under title at the prestigious AEGON Junior National Championships at the West Hants club in Bournemouth.

The 16-year-old defeated George Morgan in the final on Sunday, a day after the duo had clinched victory in the doubles event.

Morgan, who had been the victor of their last few encounters and hadn’t dropped a set all tournament, was outplayed in the first set by the intensity and accuracy of top seed Bettles, who took the first set 6-2 in just over half an hour.

The second set was a much closer affair, with endless breaks of serve that took the players up to 5-4 in Bettles’ favour.

Morgan, the second seed, was now serving to stay in the match, but it was no real surprise that a further break of serve followed with Bettles sealing the match on his first match point to win 6-2, 6-4.

Bettles said: “I’ve been very pleased with how I’ve played throughout the tournament and I definitely played my best match in the final.

“I’ve lost to George the last five or six times so to win was really good. I was looking at all the familiar names on the past winners list and I’m just really happy that I’m now on there.”

The British Junior National Championships is the highest domestic accolade available to Britain’s most promising young players.

Past champions include current men’s and women’s British number ones, Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong.
