Winners enjoy an ace night

August 26 – Former Australian ace Peter McNamara presented the prizes at the Northumberland Tennis Awards Evening.

The event, at the County Ground in Jesmond, was held during the annual Adderstone Group Northumberland Open.

It was supported by clubs from across the county, with coaches, players and parents voting in all the categories and then a panel of judges deciding the eventual winners.

The Most Improved Junior Male Award went to John Boden, with Amy Hoburn taking the female equivalent.

Performance of the Year went to Grace Dixon, Darras Hall First School were named School of the Year and Team of the Year was claimed by Ponteland TC’s men’s first team.

Other awards: Local Authority of the Year – North Tyneside Council; Coach of the Year – Phil Barron and Sarah Stevenson (joint winners); Junior Volunteer of the Year – Patrick Cree; The Gordon Brewis Service to Tennis: Ted Baty.

As well as taking care of the prize, McNamara also starred alongside former British No 1 Andrew Castle in an exhibition match with local players James Nelson and Michael Ratcliffe.

Youngsters from Northumberland gave creditable performances in the group stage of the national finals of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon National 14 and Under Challenge event at Wimbledon.

Stocksfield’s Robert Docherty progressed to the consolation draw after finishing third in his group.

The 13-year-old claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Isle of Man’s Ronan McDonnell, but was unsuccessful in his two further matches against North Scotland’s Lindsay Murdoch and Avon’s Edward Hardiman.

Docherty was joined by Whitley Bay’s Jordan Simpson, 13, (right) who also reached the consolation draw after three tough losses in his group matches.

On the girls side, the draw proved too challenging for Cramlington’s Emma Wilson – she finished third in her group and also progressed to the consolation draw.

More than 120 competitors from all 44 counties in Britain battled it out at SW19 to claim vital wins which would see the top two players in each group progress to the last 32.

Horncastle Tennis Club hosts final Mini Red tournament

August 24 – Horncastle Tennis Club hosted its final Mini Red U8s tournament of the summer season on Saturday.

Players taking part were from clubs in Lincoln, Woodhall Spa, Horncastle and Strathgryffe in the West of Scotland.
This time the tournament was run as a timed event with each match lasting 10 minutes.
This meant longer concentration spans were required by the young children and the umpires.

U8s play tie-break scoring, usually to 10 points, but with the timed event they just have to keep playing until time is up.
This resulted in some interesting scores ranging from 12-11 in a couple of close matches to 27-4 in more one sided ones.
Horncastle's Ross Armstrong and Lorna Bowser both recorded wins and Louis Croves was unlucky to lose two matches by only one point.
Freya Coleman scored a personal best in terms of points won but didn't quite win a match.
Holly Docherty from Scotland played a mature and stylish game to win the tournament, defeating Bethany Ryalls 21-10 in the final.
