Puttick steals the show at Wiltshire tournament

September 8 – Due to the large entry the Wiltshire Junior County Closed Tennis Tournament was again held at two locations. Devizes Tennis Club was the main venue with Pewsey Tennis Club being the satellite.

175 entrants, coupled with the fact that players could enter two Age Group events, meant that scheduling all 275 matches to be played was a major task. High winds during the week made playing difficult particularly for the younger players.

This year a new event was included for the 8 & Under age group (Mini Tennis Red) and after some hard fought matches Tommy Lyons from Salisbury and Amelia Bissett from Devizes became county champions and at 9 and under (Mini Tennis Orange) Swindon players George James and Niamh Townsend came out on top.

Harry Baker from Devizes overcame Bhupinder Tanday from Victoria Park, Salisbury in the boys 10 & under singles and then they teamed up together in the doubles but were beaten by Sam Harris & Jamie Barry from Riverside TC, Salisbury.

In the Girls 10 & Under events Zara Collinson from Salisbury won 2 titles when she beat Serena Jackson from Chippenham in the singles and then teamed up with Scarlett Rissone from Ramsbury to win the doubles

Arguably the best performance of the older age groups came from Mikey Puttick from Aldbourne who played up an age group to win the boys 16 & under singles when he beat Francis Smith, Salisbury, and then came runner-up in the 18 & under singles when he lost to Francis’s brother Rory. Mikey then went on to win the 14 & under mixed doubles with Alice More , Ramsbury.

Alice then won her second title when she partnered Georgina Pool , Lansdown, to win the 14 & under girls doubles. Rory Smith also took the 18 & under mixed title partnering Rachana Patel from Swindon for his second title.

Other players who won 2 titles were Katy Hancock from Wootton Basset who won both the girls 16 & 18 singles and Alex Ho, also from Wootton Bassett, who won the boys 14 & under singles and the partnered Archie Walker from Salisbury to win the doubles.

At 12 & under Isabella Fedai from Next Generation, Swindon, and William Bissett from Bath University won the girls and boys titles respectively. Chloe Moxham, Devizes, won the girls 14 & under singles.

One of the best matches saw Nathan Church, Next Gen. and Ben Sherlock, Downton overcome the stiff challenge of Samm Butler & Craig Loxton to take the boys 18 & under doubles.

Ralph Harding, President of Swindon & District Tennis attended finals day and kindly presented the trophies and medals to all the winners and runners up.

Baxter flies flag for North Staffs

September 8 - Draycott and Stone player Ryan Baxter flew the flag for North Staffordshire when he bagged the under-12 title at the Junior County Closed Championships.

The Trentham High School pupil also landed the tournament's fair play award.

Seeded one, Baxter defeated Ollie Green (Burton) 6-1, 7-5 in the semi-final at Stourbridge to set up a duel against Alex Dmitrewski (Wolverhampton) – who had earlier beaten 11-year-old Elliott Farmer (Draycott/Florence) 6-2, 6-4 in the other half of the draw.

Baxter romped to a 4-0 lead against Dmitrewski before his opponent clawed back to 4-3.

But the former under-10 champion stepped up a gear to clinch the opening set 6-3 and closed out the match 6-3 in the second.

Basford starlet Amy Ellis had to settle for the runners-up slot in the under-18s event, losing in a three-set thriller to Hayley Marshall, of Wolverhampton.

Ellis lost the opening set 6-4, won the second 5-7, but was then nudged out 7-5 in the decider.

Her progress in the under-16s draw was thwarted at the semi-final stage by Elle Stokes, of Tipton, who went on to win the title with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Marshall.

Stokes also captured the under-14 crown.

Stourbridge junior Adam Woodall collected a brace of titles, defeating Matt Hingley in the finals of the under-18s and under-16s contests.

Woodall allowed Hingley only two games in the younger age group where he cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win, but was taken to three sets in the under-18s event.

Having captured the opening set 6-3 he lost the second 6-2, but came back to take the title 6-3 in the third.

Woodall then teamed-up with Uttoxeter's Jamie Muirhead to win the under-18s doubles 6-3, 6-2 against Hingley and Jack Whetton.

Draycott's Adam Twigg, aged 13, defeated George Southall to progress to the final of the under-14s event.

However, he lost 6-1, 6-1 to his older opponent, Henry Parocki, who had beaten Draycott youngster John Thornhill in the semis.

Ellie-Rose Griffiths (Stourbridge) eased her way to the under-12s title, while Jake Lawley saw off Reece Benton 5-3, 5-4 to take the under-10s boys' honours.

The under-14s boys' doubles was won by Parocki and Southall, who beat Byron Boxer and Sam Perry 6-4, 6-1, while Paris Goodman and Stokes defeated Abbie-May Griffiths and Francesca Wilkes 6-1, 6-1 to win the girls' under-14s title.

In the Cheshire Junior Closed Championships at Grappenhall, 15-year-old Alex Grocott (Draycott/Congleton) saw off Bisham Abbey-based Jonny Bradley to reach the under-18s final, before losing to club-mate Jordan Young.
